In Belgium, the front license plate is mandatory for all registered vehicles, without exception. The Belgian Highway Code clearly states that every motor vehicle must be equipped with two license plates: one at the front and one at the rear.
What are the penalties for missing a front plate?
Driving without a front plate can lead to severe sanctions:
- €116 fine (2nd-degree offense)
- Driving ban until the situation is rectified
- Seizure of the registration certificate in case of repeat offenses
- Technical inspection failure if the plate is missing or non-compliant
Exceptions to the front plate requirement
Certain vehicles are legally exempt from having a front plate:
- Motorcycles and scooters: only the rear plate is mandatory
- Mopeds (Class A and B): only one plate at the rear
- Quads registered as motorcycles: exempt from front plate
- Classic cars: under specific conditions
