Why cancel your license plate?
Cancelling a license plate with the DIV (Vehicle Registration Service) is a mandatory procedure in several situations. Whether it's following the destruction of your plate, its theft, or the sale of your vehicle, it's crucial to declare this cancellation to avoid any future liability.

Steps to cancel online (Recommended)
The fastest and free method is via the official DIV website:
- Log in to div.be using your electronic ID card (eID)
- Access the 'My license plates' section in your personal dashboard
- Select the plate you wish to cancel
- Specify the reason: destruction, theft, vehicle sale, or other
- Upload the required supporting documents (photos, police report, etc.)
- Validate the declaration and keep the receipt
In-person procedures at a DIV counter
If you prefer human contact or do not have an eID:
- Book an appointment online on the DIV website to avoid waiting
- Bring your ID and the registration certificate (pink slip)
- Fill out the cancellation declaration form
- Hand over the physical plate if it is still in your possession
